Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn - Isle of Anglesey County Council

School Transport Policy

The Local Authority has recognised a specific geographical area for each school, known as the catchment area. A list of all schools and their catchment areas can be found in the ‘Information for Parents’ handbook.

It is the home address that denotes the secondary school catchment area, rather than which primary school their child attended.  This affects whether school transport will be free or fee-paying to pupils.

Pupils who are not entitled to free transport fall into one of the following 3 categories:

  • Year 7 to Year 11 learners who live less than 3 miles from their catchment area school
  • Year 12 and Year 13 learners
  • learners who live “out-of-catchment” i.e. chosen not to attend their nearest suitable school

There is no guarantee of transport provision to an “out-of-catchment” school.  If your child falls into one of the 3 categories above, you can apply for a vacant seat (concessionary travel) ticket, but please be advised that

  • vacant seats are limited and making an application does not guarantee that you will be issued with a bus pass
  • it may not be possible to grant a vacant seat until the number of spare seats has been determined (once entitled learners are accounted for on a specific vehicle)
  • we may be unable to confirm concessions travel before the start of the academic year (it may take a number of weeks to determine spare seat availability on any given service)
  • a reasonable charge will be applied for successful applications.

Please see our School Transport Policy for further information about our vacant seat (concessionary travel) scheme.
