George Cockram - An artist rediscovered at Oriel Môn

Posted on 30 November 2020

George Cockram’s large scale seascapes and landscapes fill the Kyffin gallery at Oriel Môn in an exhibition which shines a light on an artist whose reputation has declined since his tragic death at his studio on Anglesey. The exhibition brings together for the first time, paintings by Cockram that cover his career from the 1880s to 1940s, including paintings that made his name in the 1890s. George Cockram was Birkenhead born but lived and worked at Rhosneigr for over 50 years. Rhosneigr was important to Cockram and provided inspiration for most of his professional career.

Charles Nugent, former Curator at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester has curated the exhibition. He became fascinated by Cockram over ten years ago when he found a watercolour by him at an auction. Since then, Charles Nugent has bought and conserved his paintings and collated research in an illustrated book. Charles Nugent writes; “Cockram was a successful and highly regarded artist who regularly commanded three figure sums for his works – substantial amounts for the period. In his day, Cockram’s reputation stood high. Having trained at the Liverpool School of Art, his pictures were exhibited in London, Glasgow and elsewhere, and even as far afield as New Zealand. His paintings can be found in public collections throughout Britain.”

Esther Roberts, Senior Manager at Oriel Môn stated ‘We are really pleased to host an exhibition that brings together so many of George Cockram’s paintings. As a successful artist – he deserves to be recognised today - his paintings are dramatic and moving and continue to be a source of inspiration.“ Many of the paintings are for sale. Entry to the exhibition is free. The illustrated book, George Cockram 1861-1950’ written by Charles Nugent can also be purchased at the gallery. Visitors can book to see the exhibition online, or can visit and share details for track, trace and protect scheme on entry. Regulations are in place to ensure a safe visit for all.
