Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn - Isle of Anglesey County Council

Ongoing projects

Craig y Don, Amlwch

Precautionary exploratory works is currently ongoing at the Craig y Don Estate. The work relates to an assessment as to whether the historic use of the land could have left contamination in the soil. The Council is expected to identify and prioritise any land within its area that may have been contaminated by past industrial use.

The investigation is being funded by the Welsh Government’s Contaminated Land Capital Programme 2017-18.

History

Many residents may recall that prior to the construction of Craig-y-Don, the site was often referred to as “Gwaith Hills” or Hill’s Works. “Gwaith Hills” is a reference to the Hill’s Chemical Works which operated on the site from around 1889 and specialised in the manufacture of fertilizers. However, even before this, the site had been the location of copper smelting since around 1786.
