Recycling centres

Anglesey has two household waste recycling centres, or rubbish tips, which can be used by residents for a wide range of household waste and recycling.

Opening times

The Gwalchmai Recycling Centre is closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the Penhesgyn Recycling Centre closed to the public on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Both sites are open from 10am - 5pm on the remaining days (apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day).

Permit scheme

If you are a resident of Anglesey and you wish to visit a Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) site with a pickup, small van, short wheel base transit van, small mini bus or a private car with a medium sized trailer between 1.8m and 3m bed length, a car with sign writing, small hire vans with a hire agreement of 3 days or less you will need a permit (all vehicles must be no longer than 5m or no higher than 2.1m including any attachments). Click on the Permit Scheme link below for more information.

The Penhesgyn Household Waste Recycling Centre (near Menai Bridge) - post code LL59 5RY - is located just off the B5420, along the Penmynydd Road that runs from Llangefni to Menai Bridge. If driving from the Menai Bridge direction you go past ‘Pili Palas’ for half a mile and the turning for the recycling centre is on the right.

The Gwalchmai Recycling Household Waste Centre -  post code LL65 4PW - is located on the A5, just outside of Gwalchmai on the Holyhead side of the village. It is accessible from the A55 (Junction 5).

Please see the PDF document at the bottom of this page for a map and directions for the sites.

Both centres offer excellent facilities to recycle all kinds of household waste such as:

  • plastic bottles
  • paint
  • printer ink cartridges
  • wood and timber
  • mixes glass bottles and jars
  • cartons
  • household and garden chemicals (clearly labelled)
  • batteries
  • paper and cardboard
  • fridges and freezers, small / large appliances, TV’s and monitors
  • food tins and drink cans, scrap metal
  • furniture
  • non-recyclable household waste

Limited amounts of the following materials are also accepted:

Trade waste is not accepted at the recycling centres. We are not licensed to take trade waste of any kind. Traders break the law if they dispose of waste at these sites.

Anyone bringing household waste to these sites in a commercial type vehicle may be asked to declare it as household waste. You should be prepared to have the waste inspected to ensure it is not trade waste.
