Updated guidance on awarding business grants to self-catering accommodation

Posted on 22 April 2020

Important: The guidance discussed in this press release has changed. Please read the updated information - 5 June, 2020

The Welsh Government has updated the guidance regarding the payment of business grants to self-catering accommodation.

In order to be eligible for the grant the business must meet the following criteria:

  • The self-catering accommodation can produce two years of trading accounts directly preceding the current financial year of the business
  • The self-catering accommodation must actually have been let for a period of 140 days or more in the financial year 2019-20
  • The self-catering accommodation business must be the primary source of income for the owner (minimum threshold is 50%).

This will require the Isle of Anglesey County Council to obtain further information from each business that has submitted a grant application for self-catering accommodation.

As a result, we will not be able to make a grant payment to these businesses immediately.

Each individual business will be contacted as soon as possible to discuss the additional evidence needed and how to submit that information to the Council.

We understands that the payment of these grants are vital to maintain local businesses and will attempt to process those business grants, which meet the new criteria, as soon as possible.

We would urge applicants get in touch if they have not received payment or response within four weeks of submitting their grant form to contact us please contact us by telephone on 01248 750057 Option 1, or by Email to econdev@ynysmon.llyw.cymru

Ends 22.4.20

Notes to Editors:

The County Council is administrating two non-repayable grants - linked to the business rates payable properties – on behalf of the Welsh Government during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Both grants will apply to businesses that were on the rating list on 20 March, 2020.

Grant 1

A grant of £25,000 for retail, leisure and hospitality businesses occupying properties with a rateable value of between £12,001 and £51,000. The Council estimates that there is 240 eligible properties on the Island.

Properties eligible for this relief are being wholly or mainly used;

  • Shops, restaurants, cafes, drinking establishments, cinemas and live music venues;
  • For assembly and leisure;
  • Hotels, guest and boarding premises and self-catering accommodation.

All properties fulfilling the eligibility criteria will be able to access the grant funding.

Grant 2

A grant of £10,000 will be paid to all businesses eligible for the small business rates relief on the Island with a rateable value of £12,000 or less. It is estimated that there are up to 2,300 eligible properties on the Island.

The same ratepayer will only receive a grant for a maximum of two properties.

How will the grants be paid?

It will be paid to the eligible recipient business, preferably via direct transfer to the businesses bank account.
