Grants for businesses registered to pay business rates in Wales

The Welsh Government has introduced two non-repayable grants that are linked to the business rates payable properties.

Today (Monday, March 30th), the Isle of Anglesey County Council started administering these grants on behalf of local businesses.

Both grants will apply to businesses that were on the rating list on 20 March 2020.

Grant 1

A grant of £25,000 for retail, leisure and hospitality businesses occupying properties with a rateable value of between £12,001 and £51,000. The Council estimates that there is 240 eligible properties on the Island, entailing a grant payment of £6m.

Properties eligible for this relief are being wholly or mainly used;

  • Shops, restaurants, cafes, drinking establishments, cinemas and live music venues;
  • For assembly and leisure;
  • Hotels, guest and boarding premises and self-catering accommodation.

All properties fulfilling the eligibility criteria will be able to access the grant funding.

Grant 2

A grant of £10,000 will be paid to all businesses eligible for the small business rates relief on the Island with a rateable value of £12,000 or less. It is estimated that there are up to 2,300 eligible properties on the Island entailing a grant payment of £23m.

The same ratepayer will only receive a grant for a maximum of two properties.

How will the grants be paid?

It will be paid to the eligible recipient business, preferably via direct transfer to the businesses bank account. For most businesses we either do not hold the relevant bank details or the information we have is not up to date to enable us to make the payment. We therefore need to collect additional information from businesses to enable us to process and pay the grant. We will also have to ensure that we are paying to the correct business.

Anglesey Economic Development portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, said, “This is a really hard time for many local businesses, especially those that have had to close as a result of the coronavirus crisis. Today, we began administrating these two important grants so that Anglesey businesses get the support they need and deserve from Welsh Government.”

Businesses will be asked to complete an online form on the County Council’s website https://www.anglesey.gov.uk/en/Business/COVID-19-Grants-for-businesses-registered-to-pay-business-rates-in-Wales.aspx to ensure that we have up to date information about them.

Support for businesses – new rate relief scheme

The Welsh Government has also announced an enhanced scheme of support for businesses affected by the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Retail, leisure and hospitality businesses will receive 100% business rate relief. This will apply for the rate year 2020/21.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council will award the relief automatically. We will not be calling direct debit payments for the businesses who meet the eligibility criteria before we apply the relief criteria to their bills.

I’d like to reassure you that our staff will be working hard behind the scenes to get these grants to you as quickly as possible.”
