Posted on 31 January 2020

Work on a £130,000 upgrade to the fitness room at Plas Arthur Leisure Centre, in Llangefni, will begin on Sunday, March 1st.

The investment will provide more new state of the art leisure facilities on the Island; and forms part of a rolling programme of works which also saw a £200,000 upgrade of the fitness room at Holyhead Leisure Centre in 2018.

Gym-goers have been told about the closure period, and that brand new equipment will be waiting for them when the new facility reopen on Tuesday, March 31st.

Improvements made as part of the major new transformation scheme will inspire and enable residents of all ages to keep fit and healthy. They include:

  • New modern Cardio and strength kit.
  • New dedicated functional area.
  • Inclusive fitness room that can be accessible to all.

These improvements have been made possible through an investment of £90,000 in capital funding from the County Council and £40,000 secured from Sport Wales.

During the closure, direct debit members will be able to use other fitness rooms at the Amlwch, David Hughes and Holyhead Leisure Centres.

Anglesey’s Commercial Leisure Manager, Gerallt Roberts, explained, “We’ve been working on plans to create a modern and inclusive new fitness room for our customers for several months. The upgrade will include new TechnoGym fitness machines and equipment, as well as new flooring and decorating.”

He added, “We would, of course, like to apologise to our customers for this brief closure and inconvenience but I’m sure they’ll agree it will be worth it with major investment in new facilities and equipment. We’d like to thank them for their support and look forward to welcoming them back when we reopen.”

It is estimated that the upgrade of the fitness room at Plas Arthur will bring in around 150 new members.

Leisure portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, said, “Exercising and keeping fit is so important if we are to enjoy long term health benefits and live life to the full.”

“Finances in local government are tight, and so we’re using a sensible, and cost effective, way to invest in our leisure facilities. Our aim is to provide facilities to inspire and enable residents of all ages and abilities to stay fit and healthy.”

The Môn Actif team be offering every direct debit member at Plas Arthur Leisure Centre a voucher to eight free fitness classes. This can be collected from reception at the centre from Sunday March 1st.
