More new business units coming to former heliport site

Posted on 8 February 2022

Seven extra new business units are to be built on the site of a former heliport, in Holyhead, to support further employment opportunities in Anglesey’s Enterprise Zones.

In 2019, the County Council successfully applied for £2.3m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government and, in a first for Anglesey, agreed an innovative joint venture – worth £1.6m - with the Welsh Government for the new development on Holyhead’s Penrhos Industrial Estate.

Phase one of the re-development, which was completed in 2020, successfully delivered 10 new business units measuring at 27,600 sq ft. The units have since been fully occupied by locally expanding businesses and organisations.

The success of the first phase led Anglesey Economic Development officers to successfully secure further joint venture funding with the Welsh Government.

The second phase of development will provide 9,900 sq ft of office, light industrial and storage space to enable business growth and provide further employment opportunities in Anglesey’s enterprise zones.

Anglesey County Council’s Economic Development and Major Projects Portfolio Holder Cllr Carwyn Jones said, “The development of seven more new business units on the Island will help provide local businesses the opportunity to develop. It will also help to create new good quality job opportunities for local residents.”

“This project is part of our wider plans to further develop Anglesey’s Enterprise Zone. The new units will complement other previously EU backed business premises on the Island. They also signal our continuing commitment to improve the economic infrastructures of Anglesey to ensure that local businesses and organisations can thrive.”

Anglesey’s Planning and Public Protection Portfolio Holder, Councillor Richard Dew, added, “Preparation work is underway on site so that construction work can begin. This is an exciting opportunity for existing and new businesses on Anglesey to expand in brand new business units. Wynne Construction has been appointed to construct the seven new business units and building work is set be complete by winter 2022.

Minister for North Wales Lesley Griffiths said: “I’m pleased to see this new development taking place in Holyhead with Welsh Government support. Units like this will play a key role in the recovery following the covid-19 pandemic. They will provide valuable space for businesses to establish themselves and grow on the island while providing job opportunities in the local area.”

Wynne Construction, Construction Director, Steve Davies explained: “The seven new units will be a welcome addition to the existing retail and business provision at Penrhos and for the local community. Throughout the construction phase, we will look to leave a lasting legacy in creating jobs and training opportunities, working with our local supply chain partners and engaging with local schools to showcase the wide range and variety of job roles available within the construction industry.”
