An official ground breaking ceremony to mark the start of building work on the new Ysgol Corn Hir, Llangefni, was held earlier today (Friday 11 June).
Pupils, Governors and the Head Teacher from Ysgol Corn Hir joined representatives from Isle of Anglesey County Council and Wynne Construction to officially mark the start of construction of Anglesey’s latest new primary school.
The cost of the new Ysgol Corn Hir will be in the region of £10m; with funding provided by the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.
Jeremy Miles, the Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, said: “I am very pleased to see work commence at Ysgol Corn Hir, and am delighted that the Welsh Government has been able to support the new school project for the Llangefni area through our 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.
“The programme is aimed at creating learning spaces for communities, and this project will certainly provide for learners and the community here on Ynys Môn.
“We want to give our learners the best environment in which to learn, and this new school will certainly make sure community needs are met. I look forward to watching the project progress.”
Anglesey’s School Modernisation Programme began in 2012. Its aim is to create the best possible educational environment for head teachers, teachers and children to succeed and thereby promote high standards.
Anglesey's Education Portfolio Holder, Councillor Meirion Jones, said, "It’s fantastic to see the start of work to build a new Ysgol Corn Hir.”
He added, “This significant investment will be a real asset to the area, the families that use it and the wider community. The new school will give will give our children the best opportunity to realise their full potential.”
So far, three new 21st century primary schools have been built and opened in Holyhead, Llanfaethlu and Newborough – an investment of £22m in Education on the island.
Ysgol Corn Hir Head Teacher, Mr Rhys Roberts explained: “All of us - children, parents, governors and staff - are delighted that the school is to have a new building and that the work is underway. It's a really exciting time in the school's history.
“A new, modern and fit for purpose building will ensure the best facilities and environment for our children. We can now build further on our exciting plans for the new curriculum. We are extremely grateful that the County Council - its officers and elected members - worked so hard to secure a school that will serve the area for many generations to come.”
Wynne Construction has been appointed as Design and Build Contractor, and the new school – sited opposite the Bryn Meurig housing estate on the B5109 road - should be ready by February 2023.
Chris Wynne, managing director at Wynne Construction said: “We are very pleased to be working, once again, with Isle of Anglesey County Council on this prestigious scheme in Llangefni. As always, throughout the construction of the new school, we will look to leave a lasting legacy, by creating job and training opportunities, working with the local supply chain partners and engaging with the local community and key stakeholders.
