Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn - Isle of Anglesey County Council

Magnificent first for Anglesey swimming pools

Posted on 11 January 2022

Swimmers using any of Anglesey’s three pools can rest assured that they meet the highest quality standards.

County Council run swimming pools at Amlwch, Holyhead and Llangefni have become the first in Wales to be awarded the PoolMark Standard - the UK National Standard for operating healthy pools.

The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) is the leading authority on swimming pool operation, water treatment and technical information relating to health and safety.

PWTAG approved trainer and assessor, Mike Shuff, recently visited Amlwch Leisure Centre to present Anglesey’s accreditation.

Mike explained, “PoolMark is the UK National Standard for quality and healthy pools. It provides assurance to operators and members of the public that these pools meet the highest operational standards.”

“Anglesey’s swimming pools are the first in Wales to achieve this standard. It really is a magnificent first for the island!"

He added, “It has been a privilege to work with Anglesey’s leisure staff in recent months. The restrictions and lockdowns brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic certainly made the compliance process more difficult, but all three leisure centres have worked hard to ensure the highest standards of technical operation for their swimming pools.”

The PWTAG code of practice ensures that the technical operation of a pool meets quality standards that provide a healthy experience for swimmers using recognised and established practices, techniques, engineering and design.

Anglesey’s Leisure Facilities Manager, Mair Eluned, and her team of leisure centre duty managers, have worked closely with Mike to ensure that visitors can use swimming pools that meet the highest quality standards.

Economic Development portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, said, “I’m delighted for Mair and our leisure centres’ staff. I know first-hand how much pride they take in their work and becoming the first in Wales to gain the PoolMark standard is a fantastic achievement.”

“Our leisure team has also just completed essential maintenance at all our pools over the Christmas and New Year period. We now look forward to welcoming back our customers in 2022 so that they can once again enjoy our pools and the benefits of keeping fit and healthy.”
