North Wales Armed Forces Day and Freedom Of The County Ceremony


The North Wales Regional Armed Forces Day this year will be held at Newry Beach, Holyhead, on Saturday, May 25.

Serving personnel and veterans of our Armed Forces community will be assured of a very warm welcome. The event provides an opportunity to thank the Armed Forces for their commitment in keeping our country safe.

A key aspect of this year's event will be a ceremony granting the freedom of the County to the Royal Navy Submarine Service. This will include a parade through the town of Holyhead.

Various activities will be staged at Newry Beach by the Armed Forces community.

Members of the public will shortly be able to book tickets online for the Royal Navy 23 Ship ‘Open to Visitors’ event.

Useful information

Freedom Ceremony

The Freedom of the County Ceremony granting the Freedom Ceremony to the Royal Navy Submarine Service will take place on  Newry Beach at 11 am. Following the ceremony, there will be a military parade led by the Band of the Royal Marines through the town of Holyhead. Members of the Armed Forces ,Veterans and cadéts will be marching.Salute will take place outside the Town Hall.

Traffic restrictions

Beach Road will be closed to vehicles between 6am and 9pm 

Market street with be closed between 7am and 2pm except for delivery vehicles up  to 9.30 am. The following roads will be closed for a period of approximately 30 minutes  at some stage during the day in order to facilitate the parade.

Every effort will  be  made to minimise inconvenience.

Military Village

The Green on Newry Beach will be used as the designated military village and particapants from the armed forces community and supporting veterans organisation will be setting up on  site from 7am onwards on the day. There will be both  static and interactive displays for the public to enjoy. The Council will be operating a shutle service from Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi Car park to Newry Beach.

Parking

Please use Council car parks in the town. Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi is the designated area for veterans to park and those taking part in the parade .Please follow Traffic signs.

Bus Service

The bus stops which are situated on Summer Hill will be relocated to Holyhead Port for the day.

HMS St Albans Ship Tour

Members of the public who have pre  booked a tour of the ship need to assemble near the Coast Guard Office, 7 Prince of Wales Road ,Holyhead.LL65 1ET– a shuttle bus service will operate.Tours last approximately 45 minutes.

HMS Thetis Memorial Service

A memorial service will take place at 2pm in  Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead to mark 80 yeears since the loss of HMS Thetis.
