New variant COVID-19: business guidance

Businesses are legally obliged to take reasonable control measures to minimise the risk of transition of Covid19 and protect their staff and customers.

All businesses should consider their risk assessment and should include the control measures below as minimum reasonable steps.

Cleaning regime - Ensure all high touch areas are sanitised regularly, including trolleys, baskets, counters, self-service screens, chip and PIN terminals and door handles.

Ensure hand washing facilities or sanitisation stations are available at entrances and exits for staff and customers use.

Maximise natural ventilation, open windows and doors to encourage fresh air to circulate, as this is proven to reduce the number of virus particles lingering in the air.

Protect Staff

Where possible use physical barriers such as Perspex screens between staff and/or customers.

If staff can’t ensure minimum 2m distance or physical barrier, ensure masks are worn (covering mouth and nose)

Manage your footfall

Where possible, establish a one way system, one door in one door out to minimise incidental contact.

Prevent overcrowding – where space is limited you may need to manage the maximum number of persons permitted in at any one time.

Ensure 2m social distancing – use floor markings to guide staff/customers as to 2m distancing, in particular where they may be queuing.

Minimise exposure time

Minimise the time customers spend within the premises, discourage browsing and remove or tape off all non-essential items.

Click and collect / takeaways - Encourage pre-ordering so that you can stagger collection times. Do not provide any seating areas, if the order isn’t ready ask the customer to wait in their car or outside and return at a set time.

If they must wait in the premise, ensure social distancing markings are on the floor and do not exceed maximum numbers.

Visibly encourage compliance

Display advisory posters.

Remind customers to wear masks (covering mouth and nose), wash/sanitise hands on entry and exit and maintain social distancing.

Where possible, for the next 6 weeks, provide additional staffing to manage the entrance to prevent overcrowding and remind customers about masks and hand sanitisation.

Posters to remind staff and the public are available to download below.
