Composting is easy to do.

Incredibly, nature can recycle around a third of your waste for you including much of your kitchen waste and things that were once living in your garden. Environmentally-friendly harmless insects and microbes break down your waste turning it into useful compost that can help your garden grow.

What a Rotter

Different types of waste you put in your compost bin become compost at different rates. The best way to remember how quickly things rot is to think about their colour. Greens rot quickly and keep the compost moist. They include vegetable peel, fruit scraps, teabags, grass cuttings and hedge clippings. Browns break down slowly and help to improve the texture of your compost as well as preventing it from becoming too wet. They include straw, wood chippings, sawdust, shredded paper and cardboard. The secret to making great compost is to put equal amounts of greens and browns in your bin. The finished compost, at the bottom of your bin, will be dark brown or black and can be used directly on the garden or blended with sand or soil to make a potting mix.

Where do I put my bin?

Simply put your compost bin somewhere convenient in your garden that is easy to get to from the kitchen. Place the bin on soil if you can, as this allows helpful insects to get in from the ground. It’s good to have a container in the kitchen to put your vegetable peelings, egg shells and tea bags into, so you can take them out to the bin when it’s not raining. Your kitchen container is best with a lid and should not be too big (about the size of a bucket is ideal) as you don’t want to start making compost in your kitchen.

Top Tips:

  • Every now and then introduce air into your bin - by using a garden fork to lift/mix the material and/or adding more scrunched up paper and card.
  • Each time you visit the bin check that it’s not too wet or too dry. If it’s dry add wetter materials or sprinkle with water. If it’s wet add dry materials.
  • Let nature take its time and you’ll have compost within a year or less (six to eight weeks with effort).
  • Chop chunky and large items into small pieces to help speed up the process.
  • Your Compost is ready to use when it resembles dark soil and has a sweet, earthy smell.

What Not to Compost

The ‘forbidden’ list includes cooked vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish, bones, pet litter, disposable nappies, plastic, glass and metal.

Using your compost

Soil conditioner: Dig it into the top layer of soil, or put some into each planting hole, to improve drainage and aid fertility.

Potting mixes: Mix sieved compost with sharp sand and soil. Use roughly equal portions of each or vary quantities to suite your plants.

Mulch or top dressing: Spread a thin layer around plants to retain moisture and feed plants.
