Council Services:

Location of development

It is important that you look at the development plan and in particular check the development boundary for the particular settlement where you might be considering developing.

In general, sites in open countryside, outside of the settlement boundary will not be supported except for agricultural and forestry activity.

Main centres

Our planning polices will direct most large scale proposals into the areas near the Island’s main centres (Holyhead, Llangefni/Gaerwen and Amlwch) which we feel are best suited for most types of development. There are various industrial estates on the Island for the larger employment needs.

Secondary centres and villages

We also recognise the potential of other places such as the medium sized settlements we call secondary centres. The Island’s small villages have their own needs to and the council is keen to help sustain their future.

Economic development

The council is keen to support and strengthen the local economy therefore a positive approach will be adopted towards economic development. The location of new development will be important, but we will look at the area’s ability to properly absorb it. That will depend on the availability of infrastructure and the impact on the landscape and local amenity value.  Applications involving  economic benefits will be closely tracked to make sure they do not suffer any unreasonable delay.

Protecting open countryside and coast

The Council’s planning policies aim to protect open countryside and some policies have a special concern for those areas protected for their landscape value, nature conservation or historic and archaeological interest. On Anglesey such areas include the highly valued coastline.
