Council Services:

Woodland management

During the 20th century Anglesey, like the rest of Wales, saw a large increase in the area of its woodlands.

However, the area of woodland is still very low compared to the rest of Wales, Great Britain and Europe. Ancient woodlands are a rarity on the Island and are in need of our protection for future generations.

Trees, hedgerows and woodlands help form the landscape of the Island, are valuable habitats for wildlife and give valuable shelter to farm livestock, crops and homes. Woodlands in particular can be valuable assets to communities as they can provide a safe and pleasant environment for recreation such as relaxing walks and bicycle rides. Many estate woodlands are still used for sports such as shooting. At the same time trees provide us with a sustainable resource that can be used to help Anglesey’s economy.

This strategy is the first step that the Isle of Anglesey County Council is taking to further the Welsh Assembly Government’s woodland strategy, “Woodlands for Wales” and puts it into a local context.

There has been wide consultation on this strategy and partner organisations have been instrumental in providing guidance to the Council. I hope that you take the opportunity to read this document and help us as our partner to achieve the targets set out in the action plan and implement the strategy.
