Letters from a Lighthouse

Explore Your Archive is a joint campaign delivered by The National Archives and the Archives and Records Association across the UK and Ireland. It aims to showcase the unique potential of archives to excite people, bring communities together, and tell amazing stories.

This year, the focus of our ‘Explore’ campaign is a single volume of copy letters written by Henry Bowen, principal lighthouse keeper at South Stack, Holyhead.

This fascinating volume contains over 200 letters, which not only tell us about daily life on South Stack and the surrounding area, but also reveals important maritime connections to the wider world.

“Letters from a Lighthouse” was created in partnership by Anglesey Archives and Oriel Ynys Môn, November 2016.
