Archive's Document of the Month – November 2017

Reference Number: WD/3/69/28

Anglesey is known as Môn Mam Cymru – Anglesey the Mother of Wales, the name derives from the strong farming tradition and the productivity of the fertile fields of Anglesey, which sustained the rest of North Wales, like a mother. This tradition has remained strong - be it on the grand scale of farming or the smaller scale of allotments and gardens. Gardening is still one of the most popular pastimes, and there are shows and competitions still held to this day.

This Month’s document dates from November 1948, and is a vibrant and beautifully illustrated diploma certificate. The certificate was presented to Trefdraeth Women’s Institute for the best co-operative exhibits at the County Winter Produce Show, held at Llangefni. The ladies of the Trefdraeth WI must have been exceptional gardeners as the certificate was presented by Gordon Forsyth no less, editor of the Popular Gardening Magazine, a weekly publication which ran from the nineteenth to mid-twentieth century.
