Council Services:

Fostering - what you need to do next

We understand that it can really be daunting taking the first step to becoming a foster carer.

You probably have lots of questions and are concerned about what happens next. But rest assured, we’ll support you every step of the way. It is a rigorous process - after all we need to be sure that vulnerable children will be safe in your care. But you also have the time to learn more about fostering and to think through the implications for your family.

Here’s what will happen next, once you’ve let us know that you want to take the next step:

First we’ll visit you at home to discuss foster care with you. If you decide to apply formally we’ll ask you to complete an application form and we’ll carry out checks to make sure there’s nothing to disqualify you from fostering. Next you’ll attend preparation training with other potential carers to learn more about fostering. Then a social worker will meet with you over several months to assess your suitability. Their findings will be presented to the Fostering Panel who will decide whether to approve you as a foster carer.

Once approved you’re ready to start fostering. The age, number of children and length of their stay will depend on the type of fostering you’ve chosen and been approved for.

We’ll be with you every step of the way to make sure fostering’s right for you.

It is possible to download a form to register your interest from this website. Please send it back by email or post to the address on the right hand side of the page.
