Horizon and Isle of Anglesey County Council sign planning agreement

Horizon Nuclear Power and Isle of Anglesey County Council have signed a Planning Performance Agreement (PPA), which marks another step towards the development of a new nuclear power station at Wylfa.

The PPA sets out the working arrangements for both parties in relation to the specific activities Isle of Anglesey County Council will need to carry out to fully and impartially assess Horizon Nuclear Power’s proposals.

A PPA is a standard part of planning for a major infrastructure project and gives the local planning authority the additional resources it needs to independently assess a development proposal whilst still carrying out its statutory responsibilities.

Richard Parry Jones, Chief Executive Officer at Isle of Anglesey County Council, said: “The PPA will enable the Isle of Anglesey County Council to develop the necessary capacity and resource to deal effectively with Horizon’s proposals without adversely impacting upon existing service provision. I am confident that the opportunities and challenges associated with the potential new development at Wylfa can now be dealt with effectively for the island’s long term benefit.”

Alan Raymant, Chief Operating Officer of Horizon Nuclear Power, said: “We’re working very hard to keep Isle of Anglesey County Council informed of our developing plans for a new nuclear power station. The PPA will ensure the Council has the resources to comprehensively scrutinise our proposals.

“The PPA will help guarantee a robust assessment of a complex major development alongside the Council’s usual workload.”

Anybody who has questions about Horizon’s project can call its Wylfa information line on 0800 954 9516 or email wylfaenquiries@horizonnuclearpower.com.

Notes to editors:

Horizon Nuclear Power Ltd is a joint venture established in 2009 by E.ON UK and RWE npower. The company is developing proposals for new nuclear power stations at Wylfa on the Isle of Anglesey and at Oldbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire.

A new nuclear power station at Wylfa would deliver enough low carbon electricity for more than five million households. It is expected that around 5000 jobs would be created during the construction period and around 800 permanent operational jobs.
