Statutory assessments and maintaining statements

The Provider Unit, via a service agreement with the two Education Authorities, administers the statutory assessment process, in accordance with the relevant legislation, as follows:

  • receives requests from schools, parents and outside agencies for an assessment
  • arranges Moderating Panels and secretariat duties on behalf of Client Officers
  • provides an information pack for parents when they are informed that an assessment is being considered
  • collects educational, medical, psychological and other advice
  • draws up a proposed statement (if the moderation panel agrees that criteria are complied with) and sends a copy to the school
  • following the response of parents, sends a copy of the final statement to all who contributed towards the assessment
  • contacts the Client Officer regarding arranging the provision
  • attends annual reviews and adapts/terminates statements following moderation panel decisions
  • responds to enquiries from schools regarding the above
  • produces general reports on pupils who are the subject of a statement when requested

Aims of the Service

  • Ensuring that the statutory assessment processes comply with time limits and other legislative requirements
  • Ensuring that schools and parents receive information, advice and support throughout these processes
