Flying Start

What is Flying Start?
The Flying Start service is a Welsh Assembly Government funded programme aimed at children aged 0-3 year and their families in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales.
Flying Start brings together a number of agencies , be they midwives, health visitors, childcare providers, social care professionals, language and play co-coordinators and others whose main task is to ensure that all Flying Start children have a flying start in life by developing their language, emotional, physical and social skills to make sure that they are ready to start school.
Where it operates
Flying Start is a targeted programme which means that it is only available in 5 geographic areas on the Isle of Anglesey. A strict postcode eligibility criteria does apply. To find out whether Flying Start operates in your area please phone the Flying Start Team.
What is available through Flying Start?
1. Free quality part-time childcare for 2 - 3 year olds in one of our Flying Start childcare settings.
2. Intensive Health Visiting support - The support offered might include: - Assessing child development, and providing support to address need, baby massage, infant nutrition, maternal mental health, immunisations, dental health, Advice and assistance from a Speech and Language Therapist.
3. Parenting programmes - Which can include a range of programmes or individual support to help parents/carers with: - How to play with your child, How to help your child to learn, building a parent’s confidence to handle a child’s behaviour.
4. Basic Skills - Language and Play (LAP) and Numeracy and Play (NAP) courses are available in all 5 areas to enable parent’s to help their child’s language/numeracy development through craft activities and play sessions.
The above support may be offered in a family or group context.
