Education and Leisure Department

The department, headed by Mr Richard Parry Jones, Corporate Director, Education and Leisure, provides quality educational and leisure facilities and opportunities for people of all ages.

Roles and responsibilities

The Education and Leisure Department has responsibility for providing a variety of services to all children, young people and adults on the island, which includes educational provision, together with leisure, arts, archives and heritage services. This variety of services provides individuals with equal opportunities regardless of their personal and social circumstances to fulfill their potential and become full members of the bilingual society in which they live.

Summary of service roles

The provision includes the following service areas/centres:

Education

  • Nursery Education - for children of 3/4 years old
  • Pre-School Unit at Llangefni and Holyhead - for assessing and teaching core skills to young children.
  • Special Schools - Ysgol y Bont, Llangefni which provides education for pupils with moderate and severe learning difficulties
  • Primary Schools - there are 52 primary schools on Anglesey which receive administrative and financial support from the Education Office
  • Secondary Schools - there are 5 secondary schools located at Holyhead, Amlwch, Bodedern, Llangefni and Menai Bridge
  • Pupil Referral Unit for pupils who have behavioural problems.
  • Language Centre - there is a language centre at Llangefni and Holyhead which provides intensive teaching in the Welsh language for pupils 7-11 years of age who move into the primary schools from other areas.
  • Special Needs Units located in Llandegfan and Holyhead and Moelfre

Aims and objectives

We are committed to:

  • The provision of high quality education for all the county's children and young people.
  • Strategic planning to establish both objectives and direction for the education service by interpreting and monitoring the implementation of national policies, and the creation and implementation of policies at a local level.
  • The provision of sufficient resources for service providers so that they can achieve the necessary standards and service levels expected.
  • Monitoring and promoting quality within the curricular provision throughout all the county's schools.
  • The provision of additional specialised services to support pupils and schools.
