RDP Business Plan 1

The first business plan ran from 2008 - 2011.

A combined budget of £4.25 million was secured for the implementation of Business Plan 1 on Anglesey.

Below is a brief outline of the projects delivered during Business Plan 1 by Menter Môn and the Isle of Anglesey County Council.

Outdoor Pursuits Enterprise

RDP Contribution: £180,000 (75%)
Project Summary: The development of an Island wide sports and outdoor activities cluster with support activities to facilitate growth and diversification of the sector, whilst enhancing the market.  This will contribute towards establishing the Island as an enterprising outdoor pursuits and healthy activities destination, whilst diversifying the economic base, creating jobs and broadening the sources of entrepreneurship.

Rural Services Social Enterprise Development

RDP Contribution: £180,000 (75%)
Project Summary: The provision of a support fund for both new and existing social enterprises as a sustainable means of delivering local services whilst mobilising communities to engender pride, self-determination and community confidence.

Town and Village Environments

Project Summary: The provision of a capital fund to undertake environmental improvements whilst engendering community ownership during the design, planning and procurement processes as a means of mobilising communities to engender pride, self-determination and community confidence.

Natural Environments

RDP Contribution: £165,000 (73.3%)
Project Summary: The engagement of local communities in the creation of local nature reserves and the continued development of the Island as a haven for riparian mammals, thus harnessing the economic potential of the natural environment and mobilising communities to engender pride, self-determination and community confidence.

Mona Antiqua Restorata

RDP Contribution: £150,000 (62.5%)
Project Summary: Building on existing facilities and local community initiatives by linking attractions and sites, visitor information, geological interpretation, drawing out the Welsh language and cultural inheritance as a heritage asset, and unlocking the potential in communities to research their own local heritage as a means of enhancing economic value.

Copper Kingdom

RDP Contribution: £210,000 (77.8%)
Project Summary: The provision of a suite of spatially targeted interventions to enable local businesses and cultural entertainment agents to upgrade their services and co-operate under a ‘Copper Kingdom’ brand which can be packaged and marketed.  Activities will diversify the economic base, broaden the sources of entrepreneurship and enhance products within an outstanding rural tourism destination which is peripheral and deprived.

Project Summary: Developing the tourist information provision, developing ecotourism, improving the quality and professionalism of local festivals and events, and exciting excursions for cruise ship passengers to enhance the overall visitor experience whilst extending the benefits of tourism to the more peripheral communities.

Developed and improved existing walking, cycling routes and trails on the Island’s coastal assets.

Bauahus Succesors (Axis 4)

RDP Contribution: £240,008 (72.7%)
Project Summary: A focused effort to generate ideas, harness people’s abilities and utilise the local private sector to develop the economy from within, based upon identified unifying needs.  A focused approach will concentrate upon the recruitment of key individuals and organisations with appropriate experience (e.g. designers, sectoral supply chain specialist etc.), identifying new products utilising local resources and reflective of the local area for further development and prototyping in the market place.

Forestry Added Value (Axis 4)

RDP Contribution: £288,000 (80%)
Project Summary: Establishing a local supply chain of woodchip biomass product for local end use in the new Parc Cybi Business Park in Holyhead and also the creation of a heat treatment centre to add value to local hardwood and softwood timber (to be operated on a social enterprise basis), specifically targeting employment creation amongst economically inactive young people from areas close to woodland plantations.  The proposed activities also have considerable outputs in relation to environmental sustainability.

Agri Food Added Value (Axis 4)

Project Summary: Strengthening the relationships between farmers and food producers, and encourage a seamless approach to new food product development from the gate to the plate.  Support will be provided to individual farming families or groups of farmers to test the viability of alternative crops or livestock, whilst also facilitating innovation in termsof new food product development.

Undergraduates in Business (Axis 4)

RDP Contribution: £144,000 (70.6%)
Project Summary: Nurturing and providing practical investment into the Island’s economic future by forging meaningful and sustainable links between the Island’s ablest undergraduates and the local economy.  The project will establish a database of vacation employment opportunities for registered students (to retain their local links), with participating businesses receiving a subsidy for taking on undergraduates for a 10 week summer period.  This approach will help retain the link between talented young people and the local economy.

RDP Contribution: £240,000 (80%)
Project Summary: Targeting the outflow of high achieving young people through the establishment of a rural venture capital fund, managed by a panel of investment managers, to target returning graduates; young farmers wishing to start a business; business partnerships; business partners emerging from the Bauhaus process; and business people with innovative market led ideas (but who need to share the burden of progressing the concept to implementation). The fund will work by purchasing shares in new ventures.
