The Food Team

The Food Team works with food businesses to achieve compliance with legislation through inspection, education and the provision of information.

Where enforcement action is necessary, officers take appropriate action dependent on the seriousness of the breach of the law, guided by our enforcement policy.

Advice and help

We are happy to give advice and help to food businesses on how to comply with food safety law. To contact us, please follow the tab at the top of this page.

Key responsibilities:

  • registration of food premises
  • inspection of food businesses including manufacturers, caterers, shops and restaurants to assess compliance with regulations and to ensure that proper hygienic standards are maintained
  • inspection and approval of food premises which trade within the member states of the EU
  • food hazard warnings
  • investigate and examination of food products and premises that are subject to consumer complaints
  • food sampling
  • infectious disease investigation and food poisoning enquiries
  • port health inspections of vessels arriving at Holyhead
  • provision of information and advice on food hygiene issues

The Trading Standards service deals with labelling and compositional requirements.
