Council Services:

Day 8: Licensing – Taxi Safety

With the Festive Season upon us, many of the island’s residents will be making use of taxis to take them to and from parties and family gatherings.

There are two types of taxis, they are Hackney vehicles and private Hire vehicles.

Hackney vehicles may be flagged down on the street or may be hired from designated taxi ranks, it may also be possible to contact the taxi operator beforehand to arrange the journey, these cars will have a roof sign and a meter.

Private Hire vehicles must be pre-booked through the operator and may not be flagged down on the street.

Isle of Anglesey Trading Standards are encouraging members of the public to ensure that they engage the services of council licensed vehicles only as these vehicles and their drivers have been examined or vetted for public safety.

Licensed vehicles will display external identification plates on the front and rear, therefore if there are no plates the vehicle is not licensed. In addition every driver must wear and display an identification badge.

Officers will be carrying out late night checks throughout December to monitor compliance of taxis and to ensure no unlicensed taxis are operating on the island.
