Day 15: Keep safe in your homes this Christmas

In the build up towards Christmas we often forget important things relating to our homes – whether you are in rented accommodation or you own your own home. Here are some tips on keeping safe this Christmas.

  • Planning a log fire this Christmas - make sure that your chimney is clean so that you don’t have the worry of a chimney fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • If you have gas central heating, make sure that you have had an annual Gas Safe test of your boiler. (Note: in rented accommodation your landlord has a legal requirement to do this.)
  • Never take out the batteries from your smoke detector to fit into Christmas toys! A fire alarm will save your life. Ensure that you have enough batteries to go in all the children’s toys on Christmas morning.
  • If you are in fear of eviction over Christmas, remember that it is a criminal offence for a landlord to illegally evict you. If you are being harassed by your landlord, report them to the police.
  • Keep warm, Keep well! Ensure that there is adequate heating for your home over the winter months. If you have an elderly relative or neighbour please check to see that they too are safe and warm.
  • To see if you are eligible for support to help reduce your energy bills contact Nyst/Nest on 0808 808 2244 (Freephone) or visit their website
