Day 10: Oh no – it’s the Christmas Elf (and Safety)!

trading standards advent image 10

Christmas is full of fun – try to take a few easy precautions to make sure your holiday is as safe as possible.

  • Get someone to help you put up the decorations – not only is it safer but more fun as well
  • Stand on something suitable for putting up cards and decorations – using grandma’s wheelchair could leave you in a plaster cast for the holiday season!
  • Many of us just throw the Christmas lights into a box every January – get them out, untangle them and lay them out so you can check for any loose or exposed wires – if there are any dispose of them. Using damaged lights can be a hair raising experience!
  • If you are using candles in the house don’t leave burning candles unattended - make sure they are properly extinguished when you are not around.
  • Beware of trailing cables and wires in the rush to connect new gadgets and appliances, and always read instructions
  • Falls are the most common accidents so try to keep clutter to a minimum. Make sure stairs are well-lit and free from obstacles, especially if you have guests
  • Plan New Year fireworks parties well in advance and follow the Firework Safety Code
  • Use an RCD (residual current device) for added protection against shock
  • Do not use the lights outdoors unless specifically made for such use
  • Don’t leave fairy lights on when you go out or when you go to sleep
